And how to fix them!
We’ve all made some pretty embarrassing fashion mistakes over the years. Even though no one is exempt from getting it wrong on the fashion front from time to time, over the years we try to become better at dressing ourselves. After all, the way you dress is how you represent yourself, it’s your first impression, and it influences the way others think of you. Do you want to be the person who’s always well-dressed and looks put together? Here are some fashion mistakes you’ve probably made, and tips on how to prevent them in the future.
- Wearing the wrong underwear
Even though underwear is technically beneath our clothing, wearing the wrong underwear can make a great outfit look… not so great.
Tight clothes such as skinny jeans, bodycon dresses or skirts, and form fitting bodysuits have been in style for a long time and will continue to be. We love them because they show off our body shape and can look very sexy.
Similarly, white clothing or slightly see-through items are also highly popular.
However, when wearing those types of clothing, we have to be more mindful about the underwear we’re wearing.
If you don’t already own a few pairs of nude seamless underwear, where have you been? These are a fashion staple that every woman should have in her wardrobe. They go with everything, they won’t show any lines underneath clothing, and are more comfortable than tight, ill-fitting underwear that leave this awful line beneath your clothes.
High quality underwear is something every woman should invest in. Not only will it give a seamless, smoothing effect underneath clothing, it will also boost your confidence knowing what you’re wearing underneath is fine too!
Here are my personal favorites:
2. Those heels are just too high
High heels are flawless, they make your legs look great and can give you the elegant, feminine look you’re looking for.
That being said, if you don’t know how to walk in them, just don’t. (Even Mariah Carey has her “oops” moments).
Instead of losing the battle of wearing heels altogether, choose a more comfortable option, such as low heels, wide heels, or platform heels, and practice walking in them first.
Slingback heels are trending right now and are very elegant in lower versions. Chunky heels are also very hot currently and make it easier to have balance. Remember, height isn’t everything, it’s how you walk in them. Whatever shoe you decide to wear, make sure you’ve practiced the walk!
3. Following every. Single. Trend
Trends are not made to be followed by everyone. There are different trends that suit different styles, personalities, etc. You don’t have to follow every single one of them.
As much as I love Gigi Hadid, I am not sure what exactly is going on in this picture. A bucket hat, retro sunglasses and a choker necklace. Wearing too much trends, especially at the same time, can make you look like you’re trying too hard.
Reflect on your personal style or what style you would like to have, and think about whether this certain trend fits that image or not. Don’t copy trends blindly. Just because it looks good with someone else’s style, doesn’t mean it will suit your personal style.
4. Not accessorizing
Accessories are what makes clothing an outfit. No outfit is complete without the right bag, shoes, sunglasses, earrings, necklace, rings or bracelets.
You don’t have to wear every single type of jewelry at the same time, though you can as long as the colors and materials fit together.
Rihanna is setting the example wearing a simple blue jeans-black top outfit with a gorgeous shearling coat. She completes the outfit by accessorising with gold jewellery: a gold watch, layered gold necklaces, and multiple gold stud earrings. To top it off, she matches the Gucci coat with a Gucci handbag. A true fashion icon.
5. It just doesn’t fit (anymore)
We know you love that item, but you have to let it go.
There are two reasons why you wear clothes that don’t fit. One, you have an emotional attachment to the item. Two, you impulsively bought the item because it was either heavily discounted or stunningly beautiful, and they didn’t have your right size.
To give a short anecdote, I remember years ago buying this gorgeous pair of Steve Madden heels on sale. They didn’t have my size anymore, so I bought a smaller size. Bad idea. Every time I wore them (which wasn’t often for obvious reasons), my whole foot would swell up and every single step was excruciating pain. Not to mention how awkward I must have looked walking in them. After keeping them for a couple of years, I finally decided to sell them on Vinted and buy a similar pair, in my right size.
Moral of the story, as much as you love the item, if it doesn’t fit you, it won’t look elegant.
6. Too much color
Don’t get me wrong, color blocking is sort of in trend right now, but unless you’re Rita Ora, I don’t think you can rock this specific outfit.
Wearing too much color can look chaotic. Unless you really know what you’re doing, it’s easier to avoid color blocking in an outfit.
As a rule of thumb, an outfit shouldn’t contain more than 2 different colors.
If you want to look put together and elegant, monochrome outfits always work. Choose neutrals, blacks, whites, and an occasional pop of colour. Be careful when mixing colors and prints. Less is more!
This picture is a perfect example of how monochrome outfits can make you look chic and elegant. It soothes the eye and looks like you put a lot of thought into the outfit. Minimalism is a trend and I’m here for it!
7. You’re not feeling it
Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.

Saving the best for last, I want to remind you that what truly makes an outfit is you!
When you wear an outfit with confidence, you already are 8 steps ahead of everyone else.
Don’t be afraid to wear what makes you feel good, and don’t save your favourite items for a ‘special occasion’. Every day is a special occasion!
